Game one started off as a pitcher's duel between the Yankees' Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez and the Braves' Greg Maddux. The Braves jumped on the board first with a solo home run by Chipper Jones in the bottom of the fourth. The score remained one to zero until the top of the eighth. Bobby Cox, the Braves' manager, left Maddux in the game to pitch the eighth, whiched proved costly. He loaded up the bases and gave up a single to Derek Jeter before leaving the game in a one one tie. John Rocker then came in and gave up an important two run single to Paul O'neill which basically put the game out of reach. Mariano Rivera ended up saving game one as the Yankees one four to one.

This game was probably the least exciting game of the four game series when the Yankees jumped out to an early lead against Kevin Millwood. Millwood only lasted to plus innings and gave up eight hits and 5 runs. In addition to the poor performance by Millwood and the fact that the Braves again had zero offense, the Atlanta defense also fell apart. Ozzie Guillen dropped a soft line drive and Keith Lockhart later made a horrible throw to first on a double play attempt. Bobby Cox summed it up well when he said "We played a real bad game."

If you could have picked the one best game to watch it probably would have been this time. For the first time of the series the Braves' offense actually did its job. They jumped out to a quick one nothing lead in the top of the first. By the end of the fourth they had a five to one lead and Glavine was pitching well. However, the Yankees climbed back into the game hitting a two solo homeruns in the fifth and seventh and then tied it with a two run shot in the eighth by Chuck Knoblauch. The final blow came in the bottom of the tenth when Chad Curtis hit a blast over into the left field bleachers for his second home run of the night. This devastating loss for the Braves pretty much ended what ever hopes they might have had of winning the series.

After one game of good offense, the Braves went back to their old habits from earlier in the series only scoring one run on five hits. Again the Yankees jumped on top early with three runs in the third inning. Roger Clemens after having a lot of problems in the post season pitched a great game as the Yankees ended up winning game four quite easily with a final score of four to one.
